When a client from Chile approached us with a bold vision, to create a fully coordinated set of tack and accessories for her children’s ponies, that matched her husband’s polo team, we knew it was a project that would test every part of our customisation and equestrian embroidery process. From embroidered horse rugs and saddle pads to colour-matched, leather headcollars, bridles and Swarovski crystal browbands, it was a large, detailed order with a clear goal: flawless equestrian branding from head to tail.
Like many of our custom orders, our client, began by ordering a few pieces to test our products’ quality, fit, and overall look. After seeing the craftsmanship first-hand, our customer came back with a much larger request: 10 full sets of bridles, saddle pads, ear bonnets, bandages, and horse blankets, all colour-coordinated and embroidered with the family’s polo team logo. An additional 10 sets in pink were also ordered without embroidery. Bridles and Headcollars were made to fit part pony/part small pony and we also had custom leadropes made to match.
Ear Bonnets had to be made with smaller ear parts to accomodate the pony size, which Mattes were able to manage due to the fact they are 100% handmade. This was particularly important to create a sharp look and avoid floppy ear parts.
Due to the time difference between the UK and Chile, most of the communication was handled through WhatsApp and a few telephone calls. We listened carefully to the customer’s specific needs and created a detailed pro forma invoice that outlined every aspect of the order, including exact colour specifications.
One of the most critical parts of this project was matching a very specific cherry red, the polo team’s official colour. We worked closely with our suppliers and had physical samples made and shipped to ensure absolute colour accuracy across different materials: leather piping, saddle pads, bandages, ear bonnets, and cooler rugs.
Next came the logo work. The customer provided us with her team logo, which we had to test for size, visibility, and clarity across multiple items. The smaller scale of the ear bonnets meant the full logo wouldn’t work, so we opted for just the emblem on those, and used the full name and logo on the saddle pads and rugs.
This stage required embroidery digitization, the process of converting the design into a format compatible with our manufacturer’s embroidery machines. Three versions of the logo were digitised to accommodate the varying sizes of each product. Once approved, the order was passed to Mattes for embroidery production.
With logo placement confirmed, production began. We encountered one final challenge — the standard Mattes bandages were too long for the ponies. Our team shortened and re-finished each set by hand to ensure they fit perfectly. Once the full order was assembled, it was packed and shipped to a very happy customer.
This project highlights just how flexible and capable we are when it comes to equestrian branding. Whether you’re ordering two sets or twenty, we can help you design and customise every detail, from saddle pad embroidery and horse rug embroidery to colour-matched leather tack and digitised logos.
We can work with your existing logo, or if you don’t have one yet, we have access to expert designers who can create one for you. Once your logo is digitised, we’ll help you determine the best way to display it — whether subtly on an ear bonnet or proudly on a rug.
If you’re part of a team, club, or riding school looking to unify your look or promote your brand, we’re here to help.
