    How to Measure for your Western Saddle Pad


    • Measure your saddle length from front to back including the skirt, take the longest measurement.
    • Add 10cm to get the length of the pad you will need, round up to the nearest pad size shown on the chart.
      Example Length

      Measurement: 78cm

      Pad Size: L - 80cm

    • Turn your saddle over and measure from the centre of the saddle, to the outermost part of your rigging and under the seat to the edge of the skirt at the leg.
    • Add 5cm to get the depth of the pad you will need, round up to the nearest available depth as shown on the chart.
      Example Depth

      Measurement: 39cm

    Mattes Rio Pecos Western Saddle Pad with Shims

    Mattes western saddle pads are designed to provide exceptional comfort, stability, and pressure distribution for horses working under western saddles. The Rio Pecos saddle pad with shims combines Mattes’ premium materials with an adjustable correction system, and the squared-off lower edge design, allowing riders to fine-tune saddle balance while maintaining close, stable contact.

    Lambskin lining and comfort

    This saddle pad is fully lined with genuine Mattes lambskin, carefully selected and matched for density, softness, and consistency. Lambskin helps regulate heat, reduce friction, and provide natural cushioning across the full contact area, making it particularly well suited to sensitive horses or those working for longer periods.

    The sheepskin lining is fully removable for washing, helping to maintain hygiene and extend the working life of the pad. Mattes has their own range of Melp Cleaning fluid, especially designed for their sheepskin.

    Shim pockets and fit adjustment

    The Rio Pecos pad features a six-pocket shim system, with three pockets on each side. These pockets are designed to accept removable shims, allowing for small, targeted adjustments to saddle balance. This can be useful for accommodating minor asymmetries, changes in muscle development, or temporary fit variations.

    The shim system is intended for fine adjustment only and should not be used to compensate for an incorrectly fitting saddle.

    Pad shape and construction

    This pad is supplied in a square western shape with a quilted cotton outer and a standard depth of approximately 36 cm. The construction provides stability under the saddle while avoiding unnecessary bulk, helping the pad sit neatly and consistently during work.

    Colour options and availability

    This western saddle pad with shims is held in stock in Large and is available in selected quilt and lambskin colour combinations, with matching leather knee guards, including Black quilt and natural sheepskin, Brown quilt and natural sheepskin, and Brown quilt and Brown sheepskin. These items are held in stock at the Mattes warehouse in Poland and allow for faster delivery compared with fully bespoke Mattes western pads.
