How to Measure for your Western Saddle Pad


  • Measure your saddle length from front to back including the skirt, take the longest measurement.
  • Add 10cm to get the length of the pad you will need, round up to the nearest pad size shown on the chart.
    Example Length

    Measurement: 78cm

    Pad Size: L - 80cm

  • Turn your saddle over and measure from the centre of the saddle, to the outermost part of your rigging and under the seat to the edge of the skirt at the leg.
  • Add 5cm to get the depth of the pad you will need, round up to the nearest available depth as shown on the chart.
    Example Depth

    Measurement: 39cm

    Pad Depth: 40cm

Mattes Standard Velvet Performer Western Saddle Pad

Mattes Standard Velvet Performer Western Saddle Pads are defined by the angled lower stepped edge on the bottom of the saddle pad. Up to three optional correction pockets can be incorporated on each side and two separate panels with detachable lambskin. Velvet Performer Western saddle pads are available in sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL.

The width of the sides can also be altered to suit your needs. Choose from more than 30 different lambskin colours; the leather side protection is available in black, brown and champagne. The top band, binding and up to three rows of decorative piping are available in almost 50 colours.

The Standard Velvet Performer Western Saddle Pad is as the name suggests made from a luxurious but hard wearing velvet quilt. The quilt is the same pattern as used on cotton sheen pads and has a lovely sheen appearance. There is a choice of over 15 different quilt colours and once you include the trim options, there is an unlimited number of combinations. The Standard Velvet Performer western saddle pad is also available in standard cotton or cotton sheen quilt.

The standard velvet Performer western saddle pad differs from the Rio Pecos Saddle Pad in that the sheepskin is not detachable. The upside is that the overall cost of the pad is less. The downside is that you are unable to detach the sheepskin for cleaning or purchase a replacement.

The SPINEFREE® design reliably prevents any pressure around the withers and spine.

The core of Mattes Saddle Pads is made of two layers: POLY-FLEX® (a deep-needled polyester felt) is used to maintain the shape and spread the pressure, while polyester wadding provides padding and allows air to flow through the fabric. We completely avoid foam, neoprene or gel, making the whole pad breathable.

Mattes Velvet Performer Western Saddle Pads are available with the CORRECTION® System on request, with a choice of one or three pockets; we supply three 5 mm-thick felt shims (POLY-FLEX®) for each pocket, offering the same pressure relief as a good quality new saddle, padded with wool and horsehair.
